Key Verse 18

1.       (1-3)What did the author claim about the Word in vv1-3? According to this claim, what is the Word?

2.       (4-8) What is the second claim about the Word (4)? What is ‘life’ in him? Why is it the light for all mankind?  What does the darkness depict of in v5? What might it mean that the darkness has not overcome the light? What was the role of John regarding this light? Why did the author mention John (ref. 1:23)?

3.       (9-11) What was the true light going to do and why? In view of v 4-5, what would be the outcome of ‘coming’ of the true light? What was the response of the world to his coming? What does this tell about the world (Ref. v5)?

4.       (12-13) What did he offer? To whom and how (12)? How can a man become children of God (13)? Discuss this in terms of men’s role and God’s work.

5.       (14-15) What has the Word become and for what purpose(14)? Who is ‘we’? What have ‘we’ seen in the Word? What are the two distinctive characteristics of the Son (14)?  On what aspect did Jesus surpass John? 

6.       (16-18) What is the outcome of such overflow of grace (16)? What is the difference between what was offered through Moses and what was offered through Jesus (17)? What did Jesus make possible (18)?

Look, the Lamb of God(1b)

John 1:19-50

Key verse 29 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

1.       [19-28] Who asked John who he was? (19) Who was he not and who was he? (20-23) What question did the Pharisee raise? (24-25) Why? What was John’s answer? (26-27)

2.       [29-34] The next day, what did John say about Jesus? (29-30) What was the purpose of his baptism? (31) How was this revealed to John? (32-33) Through this, what did John come to know? (34) And find its meaning (ref. Is 42:1; NAS)

3.       [35-42] When John saw Jesus the next day, what did he say to his disciples? (35-36) On hearing this, what did the two disciples do? (37) Why? (38-39) Who was Andrew? (40) What was the first thing that Andrew did? (41) Why?  (42a) When Jesus saw Simon, what did Jesus say to him? (42bc) What did Jesus mean?

4.       [43-46] When, where, and why did Jesus go and find Philip? (43) What did Philip do then? (44-45) To Philip’s testimony, what doubt did Nathanael raise? (46a) What was Philip’s answer? (46b) Why?

5.       [47-51] What did Jesus say to Nathanael when he saw him coming? (47) Why was Nathanael surprised at his word?(48a) What did Nathanael confess? 49) Why? (48b-50a) What did Jesus say more to him? Why? (50b-51)

6.       Find how each of these people came to know Jesus and confessed their faith in him. Find similarity and differences among them as well.

Jesus changes water into wine (2a)

John 2:1-12

1.       [1-2] When and where did the wedding take place? (1a) Who was invited to the wedding? (1b-2) Discuss Jewish weddings.

2.       [3-5] What happened at the wedding? (3a) What might be the cause of such shortage of wine? (Deut 28:12-18-39; Isa 24:1-7-9; Hos 2:8)  What might be its effect on the bridegroom and the guests?  What did Jesus’ mother say to him? (3b) Why? What was Jesus’ reply? (4) What did Jesus mean by that? What did his mother say to the servants? (5) Why?

3.       [6-8] What stood nearby and what were they used for? (6) What did Jesus tell the servants to do? (7a) What else then? (8a) How did they follow his instructions each time? (7b,8b) Why? (Cf. 5) 

4.       [9-10] What happened to the water? (9a) What did the banquet master say to the bridegroom after tasting it? (9c-10) What did he not know? (9b) Who knew it? (9b) Discuss the implication of what a large amount of wine would do for the bridegroom and the guests. (Joel 3:18; Jer 31:12)

5.       [11-12] What does the author call this event? (11a) Why? (the synoptic Gospels call it a miracle) What did this reveal? (11b; Hos 2:19-20) Discuss this in view of the fact that it was a wedding and Jesus’ provision of an abundance of wine. How did this event help his disciples to believe in him? (11c) Where did Jesus go after this and with whom? (12a) How long did he stay there? (12b)

6.       In what respect did the first sign reveal Jesus’ glory? (cf. 1:3,4,14) What was the significance of his first sign?

John 2:12-25

1.       [12-16] Find Jesus’ whereabouts after this event. (12-13) In the temple court, what did Jesus find? (14) What did he do then? (15) Why? (16)

2.       [17-19] What and how did the disciples foresee? (17; Ps 69:9)  What did the Jews demand Jesus of? (18) What did Jesus offer? (19) On what condition? (19)

3.       [20-22] Why was Jesus’ offer an impossible thing to them? (20) What was its meaning? (21)  When and how did the disciples come to know its meaning? (22a) When and how did they come to believe such an impossible offer? (22b)

4.       Discuss the purpose of the temple and Jesus’ will for that purpose. (Exo 19:4-8; 24:7-8; 25:8-9; Cf. Ezek 8,9,10; Luke 2:49; Eph 2:17-22; Heb. 10:7-12)

5.       [23-25] During this Passover, what did many see? (23)  As the result what did they come to believe? (23) What would he not do? (24) Why? (25) What was the thing that was in each person? Discuss what it means that he did not entrust himself to them.

6.       Find the difference between the faith of the disciple in v 22 and the faith of the people in v23 and their significances and the reasons for such difference.
