1. (1-3)What did the author claim about the Word in vv1-3? According to this claim, what is the Word?
2. (4-8) What is the second claim about the Word (4)? What is ‘life’ in him? Why is it the light for all mankind? What does the darkness depict of in v5? What might it mean that the darkness has not overcome the light? What was the role of John regarding this light? Why did the author mention John (ref. 1:23)?
3. (9-11) What was the true light going to do and why? In view of v 4-5, what would be the outcome of ‘coming’ of the true light? What was the response of the world to his coming? What does this tell about the world (Ref. v5)?
4. (12-13) What did he offer? To whom and how (12)? How can a man become children of God (13)? Discuss this in terms of men’s role and God’s work.
5. (14-15) What has the Word become and for what purpose(14)? Who is ‘we’? What have ‘we’ seen in the Word? What are the two distinctive characteristics of the Son (14)? On what aspect did Jesus surpass John?

3. [35-42] When John saw Jesus the next day, what did he say to his disciples? (35-36) On hearing this, what did the two disciples do? (37) Why? (38-39) Who was Andrew? 4. Discuss the purpose of the temple and Jesus’ will for that purpose. (Exo 19:4-8; 24:7-8; 25:8-9; Cf. Ezek 8,9,10; Luke 2:49; Eph 2:17-22; Heb. 10:7-12)
