John ch 5-7 questions

If you hear his voice and believe him

John 5:16-47
Key Verse 5:24
1.    [16-20a] Why did the Jewish leaders persecute Jesus? (15-16, 18;Cf. 10) Why was Jesus doing these things on the Sabbath? (17) Why did they try to kill Jesus all the more? (18) How did Jesus detail the relationship between him and God the Father (19)? Why was such an intimate relationship in working (20a)?
2.    [20b-24] What would God show him more (20b-21)?  What else did the Father also entrust to the Son? (22) Why? (23) What does it mean to honor the Son? (24)
3.    [25-27]What is coming and when? (25; cf. 4:43-54; 5:1-9; 11:43-44) Discuss what it means “for the dead hear the voice of the Son of God”.  Why will that be possible? (26-27;Cf.21-22) Discuss the significance of v27 with respect to v 25.
4.    [28-30] What is coming? (28) Why would it be so marvelous? (29) In all these, what is the thing that no one should make a mistake? (30)
5.    [31-40] Who and what testify about Jesus? (31-40) Discuss each. What does all this tell about Jesus?
6.    [41-47] Why do they not accept Jesus? (41-44) Who will accuse them and why? (45-47)

Surely this is the Prophet
John 6:1-26
Key Verse: 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
1.        [1-5a]To where did a crowd follow Jesus and why? (1-2) Where did Jesus move on further (3)? When and why (4; Cf. Mk 6:31)?
2.        [5-9] At that time whom did Jesus see coming (5a)? How might this crowd be different from the ordinary crowd (Cf. John 7:12-13, 31-32)? What did Jesus ask Philip (5b)? Why (6) What was his answer (7)? What did he mean by this? What did Andrew do (8-9)? What does the response of these two disciples suggest about the situation?
3.       [10-13] How many ate and how much did they eat (10-11)? How much leftover was collected (12-13)?
4.       [14-15] Seeing this sign, what did the people say about Jesus (14; Cf. Deut 18:13-15-19 )? Then what did Jesus do and why (15)?
5.       [16-21] As the evening came, where did the disciples go and how (16-17)? On their way, what happened to them (18; Cf. Mark 6:45-48)?  At this time, what did Jesus do for them (19-21)?
6.       [22-25] What did the crowd realize the next day? (22-23) What did they do then (24-25)? Why (26)?
7.       Discuss the significance of these two signs for the crowd and for the disciples (Cf. Neh 9:10-17). Also find why Jesus dismissed the crowd and sent away his disciple quickly (15, 19 Cf. John 12:24-27).

Jesus’ flesh and blood, the real food for life
John 6:26-70
Key Verse:  54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
1.                   [26-27] What efforts did they make to find Jesus (22-26)? Why were their efforts misdirected (27a)? Instead, what should they look for in Jesus (27a)? Why (27b)? How has God put his seal of approval on him?
2.                   [28-34] What’s the work they must do (28-29)?  Discuss what it means. As a condition to believe, what do they ask (30-31; Cf. Exo 16:15)?  Who gave them bread and what is he giving them now (32-33)? Find how the mind of the crowd changed (26, 28, 34)
3.                   [35-40] What did Jesus declare himself to be (35a)? What’s the effect of that bread? (35b; Cf. v34) Then why were they still hungry and thirsty (36)? What did they have to know about Jesus, the bread of life (37-39)? In all these, what is the Father’s will? (40) Discuss relationship among men’s hunger and thirst, the bread of life, eternal life and God’s will.
4.                   [41-48] What could they not accept Jesus’ word (41-42)? According to the Prophets, who only could come to Jesus? Discuss what ‘taught’ ‘heard’, and ‘learned’ imply (45). Why only this way (46)?  Based on these, what was confirmed and concluded (47-48)?
5.                   [49-58] How was Jesus different from and similar to Manna (49-51b; 58)? What is this bread exactly? (51c) What did they have to do with this bread so as to have eternal life (53-54)? What does it mean that Jesus’ flesh and his blood are real food (55-56)? Where is this life from and how is it conveyed to people (57)?
6.                   [59-70] When his disciples grumbled, what possibility did he open to supplant their belief (62; Cf. 51)? What did they fail to discern that they could not accept Jesus’ teaching (63a)? What is his teaching (63b)? Why did many of his disciples leave him (65-66)? How was Peter’s faith different from those who left (67-69; Cf. 63)?

Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out
John 7:1-52
Key Verse:  17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.
1.        [1-13] After this, where did Jesus stay and why (1)? As the Festival of Tabernacle was near, what did his brothers tell him to do (2-4)? Why (4b-5)?  What was the reason why Jesus did not go up to the festival (6-8)?  When and how did Jesus go to the Festival (9-10, 14)? While he was not there, what did the people say about Jesus (11-13)?
2.       [14-24] How did Jesus present himself to the people of Jerusalem (14)? Why (15, Cf. 19c)? Where did Jesus’ teaching come from (16)? What is the proof (18) and who could discern such proof (17)?  As the crowd was unwilling to accept, what rebukes (19c, 24) did Jesus make against the leaders? Based on what (21-23; John 5:12-30)?
3.       [25-32] When the leaders could not say a word, what question did some of the people of Jerusalem raise (25-27)? What was Jesus’ answer to their question of where Jesus came from (28-29)? What did he mean? What did the people try to do (30)?  Even with such a hot debate, what did some do and say (31)? Why (32)?  On hearing this, what the Pharisees and the chief priests do (32)?
4.       [33-43] While they tried to seize him, what did Jesus reveal to them (33-34)? Why were the Jews puzzled on Jesus’ word (35-36)?  On the last day of a festival, what did Jesus offer in a loud voice (37-39; Cf. note)?  What were the responses of the people (40-43)?
5.       [44-53] Who defended Jesus and on what ground (46,50-51)? What did the Pharisees and chief priests propose as the reason for disbelief (47-49; 52)? Discuss the situation of this discourse (30, 32, 44, 46)

6.       Find three things that Jesus did in this discourse with the Jews. Also, discuss what each of these things means to you.
