John ch 3-4 questions

John 3:1-21
Key Verse 14-15
1.       [1-3] Who was Nicodemus? (1) What did he know about Jesus? (2) When and why did he visit Jesus? (2; Cf. 3; 7:25-27; 9:24) Discuss the positive aspects of his visit to Jesus. What was Jesus’ answer to his quest? (3) 
2.       [4-8] In Jesus’ answer, what difficulty did Nicodemus see?  (4) What was Jesus’ answer about ‘being born again’? (5-7; Cf. Ezek 36:20-28)  Discuss what Jesus’ answer means particularly in view of v8.
3.       [9-12] What did Nicodemus ask? (9) What did Jesus rebuke him of? (10) Why? (11) Discuss how Nicodemus could begin to understand the things of heaven and how it is related to his quest (12; Cf. 3)
4.       [13-18] What is the uniqueness of the experience of the Son of Man and its implication? (13; Cf. 12) What was the Son of Man to do? (14; Num 21:4-9) Why? (15) What is God’s purpose in this? (16-17) What’s the implication of all these for Nicodemus? (18)

1.       [22-26] After the meeting with Nicodemus, where did Jesus go and what did he do there? (22; cf. 4:2) When, where and what was John doing? (23-24; cf. 1:28) On what did an argument develop and between whom? (25; cf. 1:24-25) Why? (Cf. 26) What did they complain about? (26)   
2.       [27-30] What was John’s reply? (27-28) What was his view of himself and his role? How did he describe his joy? (29) What did his final remark show about his value system and his life goal and his joy? (30; cf. Phil 1:20)
3.       [31-32] Why is the one who comes from above all? (31-32a) Who is he? (Cf. 3:13) What was people’s response to his testimony? (32b)

John 4:1-26

1.       [1-6] Where was Jesus going? (3) Why? (1-2; John 3:22-26) Where and when did Jesus stop by and why? (4-6) Find out the history of Samaria and Sychar (1 King 16:24; Gen 33:18-20)
2.       [7-12] When a woman came to draw water, what did Jesus ask her? (7-8) What was her answer? (9; Cf. 2 King 17:24-41) How and what did Jesus offer to her? (10) Why was his offer intriguing to her? (11) On what and why did she raise a question? (12)
3.       [13-15] How is the water Jesus offers different from the water in the well? (13-14) Why was she willing to take Jesus’ offer? (15) In her answer, what did she disclose about her life? Why?
4.       [16-19] What did Jesus tell her to do? (16)  Why? What was her answer? (17a) How did Jesus accept this answer? (17b) What did he disclose on her life? (18) Why?  Through this, what did she believe about Jesus? (19) Discuss how Jesus led her to find an answer for her question (ref 12; Cf. John 1:38-41), and also find its relevance and significance to your life.
5.       [20-24] What question did she raise? (20; Ref. 1 King 12:25-31; Deut 11:29)  Why and why now? What did Jesus teach about worshipping God? (21-23)  What does it mean to worship God in the Spirit and in truth? (24; John 14:6) Find their significances and implications for the woman and for us today.
6.       [25-26] What did she know and believe? (25; Ref. Deut 18:15-18) What did Jesus declare? (26) What does it mean to her? Discuss how Jesus helped this woman believe Jesus, the source of living water and find its implication to you.

John 4:27-42

1.       [27] Why were his disciples surprised when they came back (27a; cf. 4:8)? Why did they not ask him (27b, Cf. 9c)?
2.       [28-30] What did the woman do then and why (28-29; cf. 25-26)? What changes do you see in her (Cf. 7,9,11,15,19-20)? What was the response of the town people (30)?  Why?
3.       [31-33] What did the disciples urge Jesus to do and why (31, ref. 6)?  What was his reply (32)? How did the disciples understand this (33)?
4.       [34-38] What was Jesus’ food? (34, Cf. 35) When was the regular harvest time (35a)? Why was this harvest a surprise (35b-36; Cf. Mic 6:15; Lev 26:16)? Who were the sower and the reaper (36-37; cf. 34; Mat 25:26; John 12:24)?  What’s is significance and implication for the disciples (38)?   
5.       [39-42] What was the woman’s testimony and its impact on the Samaritans (39)? What did they ask Jesus to do and why (40a)? After staying two more days with them, what happened (41-42)? Discuss this in view of what Jesus said in v35-38, particularly in regard to v38 and its implication for the disciples. 



The man took Jesus at his word (4c-5a)
John 4:43-5:16
Key Verse 5: 50b The man took Jesus at his word and departed
1.       [43-47] When Jesus arrived in Galilee, how did the people accept him and why (43-45)? When he visited Cana again, who came and why (46-47a)? How and why did he beg Jesus to do (47b)?
2.       [48-49] What was Jesus understanding of them (“you’ is plural) (48)? What did the official insist Jesus do (49)?
3.       [50-53] What did Jesus tell him to do (50a) How did this man follow Jesus’ word (50b)? On his way home, what did he ask his servants from home and why (51-52)?  Why did he and his whole family believe Jesus (53)? Discuss what Jesus meant in v 48 and its implication for the official and the people of Galilee.
4.       [6:1-9] When and where did Jesus see a man invalid for thirty-eight years (1-5)? What did Jesus ask this man and why (6)?  What was his answer? (7) What did Jesus say to him (8)? Why?  Then what happened (9)?
5.       [10-16] Who rebuked this man and of what (10)? When Jesus met the man, what did Jesus warn him of? (14) Why? (11-13, 15) What did the Jewish leaders begin to do and why (16)?

6.       Compare the faith of the royal officer, the invalid man, and the Jews with the faith of the Samaritans (or Samaritan woman) and find its significance to our faith.
