The Lord Himself will establish a house for you

Lord himself will establish a house for you
2 Sam 7:1-29
Key verse 11c
1. What was the desire of David? Why [1-2]? What was Nathan’s encouragement to David and why [3]? Why, in God’s point of view, was building a house of cedar inappropriate for God [6]? In the past, how has God moved about with whom? What was primary purpose of God in doing so [Exod. 33:12-17; Lev 26:12;Exo 19:4-6]? Why did God not ask the leaders of Israel to build a house for Him [7]? What might be the implication of the fact that God has to move about with his people?
2. What did God do and/or has He been doing for David? What is God’s plan for David [9b]? To whom did God make such a promise [Gen 12:1-3]? In view of the following verses [10-11], what would be the nature of greatness of his name?
3. What will God do for his people Israel? What are the natures of the future place where God’s people Israel will live? How is it different from the current one [10-11]? What is God’s ultimate goal for His people [10-11; Deut 28]?
4. In what way would God fulfill such purpose [11b]? Why did God make such a strong emphasis on the plan that God will establish a house for David [11b]? Discuss this in view of David’s plan [1-2] and God’s plan for David and His people [9b-11a] What did he mean by establishing a HOUSE for David [12, 13b]? In God’s plan what has to come first before building a house for God? Why? Find two reasons [4-7;Deut 9:5; Isa 9:7; Isa 37:32
5. Through whom and in what way would God fulfill this purpose [12]? What would be the characteristics of the king and his kingdom [12-14a]? ] In what respect is this prophecy fitting to Solomon and in what respect it is not? What are particular about God’s relationship with him [14-15]? In all these plan of God, what might be the significance of David life as the king of Israel [16]? How was this promise understood by the people of later years [Jer 33:14-26; Ezek 34:23-24; Mark 10:47; John 2:19-22]?
6. Read 17-22. How does he address God and himself throughout his prayer and petition? Why? What was the theme of thanksgiving of David [19]? What was the primary purpose of doing all these [21]? What might be ‘your word’ and ‘your will’? By knowing what was yet to come in and through his descendant, what did David perceive about the nature of God [22]? How can one become a believer of the one and only transcendent God as David confessed?
7. Read 23-24. What three things did God do through and for Israel? What was God’s ultimate purpose for doing these? How does this in line with what God promised to David in vv12-13?
8. Read v25-29. What is his petition [25]? For what purposes was he pleading God to do what he has promised [26]? What was the foundation of his repeated petition [28]?
