The Parable of the Sower (Mark 4aq)

The Parable of the Sower
Mark 4:1-34
Key verse 4:20
1.      [1-9] What did Jesus do to teach the crowd? (1; Cf. 3:9, 20) What method did he use? (2) When the farmer was scattering the seeds, where did the seeds fall and what happened to each one? (3-8) With what word did he start the parable and end it and why (3a, 9)?
3.      [14-17] What does the seed refer to? (14) What happens to the word sown in the path-like people? (15) How do the rocky-place-like people respond to the word? (16) What happens to them and why? (17)
4.      [18-20] What happens to the seed sown in the thorny-place-like people and why? (18-19) What do the good-soil-like people do with the word and what is the result? (20) Discuss what helps to promote the kingdom of God and what hampers the spreading of the kingdom of God.
5.      [21-25] Where do they put a lamp and why? (21) What is his intention of hiding and concealing things? (22-23; cf. 9) What do these refer to? (cf. 11,14) Why should they consider carefully what they hear? (24-25) How is this related to the parable of the sower?
6.      [26-32] How does the seed sown on the ground grow and produce grain? (26-28) In what respect is the kingdom of God like this? How small is a mustard seed and how big does it grow? (30-32) In what respect is the kingdom of God like the mustard seed?
7.      [33-34] How did Jesus teach the crowd? (33-34a; cf. 2) Why? To whom did he explain the parables? (34b; cf. 11a) Overall, what are the secrets of the kingdom of God? Discuss this in regard to its characteristics or natures, how they are given, and how we can attain it.
