Victory? Not of your righteousness! (Deut 9-10aq)

Deut 9:1-10:11
Key Verse 5  It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
1.       [1-7] What is the occasion of this address (1)? What is the first concern (2)? How will God help them (3)?   What is Moses’ next concern (4a)? How should they understand the victory (4b-6)? What will help them not to be righteous? (7, Ref. 4a)
2.       [8-17] At Horeb, what did Israel do (8)? How (9-14)? Discuss the nature of God’s anger against Israel at this time (12b-13; ref. 16b) and the implication of His plan (14).  What did Moses see and do (15-17)? Why (16b)
3.       [18-21 ] What did Moses do (18a,25) and why (18b-19)? What did Moses do to avert God’s anger to Aaron and to the people (20-21)?
4.       [22-24] Find how Israel made God angry in these places: Taberah (Num 10:35-11:3),  Massah (Exo 17:1-7), Kibroth Hattaavah (Num 11:31-35), and Kadesh Barnea (23-24; Num 14-15; 14:6-9)
5.       [25-29] How intense was his prayer (25a; Cf. 18)? Why (25b)?  In his prayer, what reasons and purpose did Moses proffer to avert God’s plan to destroy Israel (26-29)?
6.       [10:1-5] In relenting His decision, what did God tell Moses to do to proceed with the covenant (1-2)? When he made two stone tablets and brought them to the LORD, what did God do (3-4)?  Where are they now? (5) What might be its significance?  When and where did Aaron die (6-7; ref. Num 33:37-39; Deut 1:3)?

7.       [8-11] When did God set apart the tribe of Levi (8; Ref 6)?  As he concludes this, what does Moses recognize about God’s purpose in forgiving them (10-11)? In reviewing the history, what is evident about them, God, and his purpose for them? What does this mean to them?
