1. [1-2] Who was Caesar Augustus and Qurinius? (Ref. Wikipedia) What decree did Augustus issue? Why? Discuss what the implication of this to Jesus’ birth might be. (Cf. Luke 1:5)
2. [3-7] Who was Joseph? What did Joseph do and why? [6-7] What happened while they were there? What did Mary do with the baby born? Why? Who knew the birth of Jesus? Discuss the significance of Caesar and his decree in the birth of the Savior.
3. [8-12] To whom did an angel of the Lord appear? When and how? (8-9a) What was the response of the shepherds? Why? (9b) What was the message of the angel to them? (10-11) What does it mean that a Savior is also “the Messiah”, and “the Lord”? (11) What was the sign of the birth of a Savior? (12)
4. [13-14] Suddenly, who appeared? (13) What did they do? (14) Why do you think that God sends the heavenly hosts to show this to the shepherds? (Cf. 12) Discuss the significance of this in respect to the sign (John 6:38-40; Heb 10:5-7)
5. [15-18] What did the shepherds do after the angel left? Why? What did they find? (16) What did they do then? (17) Why? What was the response of the people? (18)
6. [19-20] What did Mary do with the experience of the shepherds? (19) What was the reason for the joy of these shepherds and how did they express their joy? (20) Discuss what might be the purpose of God in revealing the birth of the Son of God in this way to such people.
