Israel tests the Lord (Exo 17aq)*

Exodus 17:1-7
Key verse - 17:6

1.    [1-2a,3] Where did the LORD lead Israel after their time in the Desert of Sin (1a; 6a; 19:1-2; Numbers 33:11-15)? What did they find there (1b)? What did they do with Moses and what were they grumbling about (2a,3)? How serious was the situation (cf. 4b)?

2.    [2b,7] What did Moses say about their quarreling with him (2b)? In what respect did they put the LORD to the test (7b; cf. 15:22-16:36)?

3.    [4-6] What did Moses do (4)? What was God’s instruction for Moses (5)? What would the LORD do (6a)? How would he provide water for them (6b)? What would God show them through this? How did Moses carry out the command (6c)?

4.    [7] What did Moses call that place and why? What did this event reveal about the Israelites (cf. Numbers 20:1-13; Psalm 95:7b-11)? Read Exodus 15:22-27 and Numbers 20:1-13. Compare these accounts with this event and identify any differences. How much helpful were Israel’s experiences with God in previous events, as compared with this event? Why or why not?
