For to us a son is born (Isa 9q)

For to us a son is born
Isaiah 9:1-7
Key Verse – Isaiah 9:6

1.       [Isaiah 9:1-2] What was the good news  coming to those who were in distress (Isaiah 9:1a)? In the past, how had God subjected the people of Zebulun and Naphtali to  distress (Isaiah 8:7-8; 9:1a; 2 Kings 15:29)? Discuss the nature of their suffering and darkness (Isaiah 8:21-22)? Why (Isaiah 8:6-7, 17)? In the future, what will God do for Galilee of the nations (Isaiah 9:1b, ref. Matthew 4:13-16)? How (Isaiah 9:2)? Compare the two words, “humiliated” and “honor” (translated as “contempt” and “glorious” in the ESV).
2.       [Isaiah 9:3-5]What would God do (Isaiah 9:3a)? Discuss the nature of the joy He brings (Isaiah 9:3b). How would He accomplish these things (Isaiah 9:4-5; ref. Judges 6:3-7, 13-14; 7:18-22)?
3.       [Isaiah 9:6] How were these things possible (Isaiah 9:6a)? What would the promised child be called (Isaiah 9:6b)? What does each of these names mean?
4.       [Isaiah 9:7ab] What would be the outcome of this coming king’s rule (Isaiah 9:7a, 3a)? What does it mean that he would reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom? What will the characteristics of his rule be (Isaiah 33:5; Jeremiah 9:24; Hosea 2:19)?
5.       [Isaiah 9:7c] In what ways were these events assured to happen for those living in darkness (ref. Isaiah 37:32-34; 59:17)?  What was God’s ultimate goal in pouring out His zeal through these events? What do we find in Jesus’ life in regard to his zeal (John 2:17; Hebrews 10:5-7; John 6:38)?
