The perfect Sacrifice of His Son (Heb 10aq)

The Perfect Sacrifice of the Son for the will of the Father

Heb. 10:1-18*

Key Verse 10

“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”.

I.              God demands nothing less than  perfection (1-4).

1.    What is implied by saying that the Law is a shadow of reality? What are the differences between the shadow and the reality?

2.    What are the good things that are coming? In His will, God set up a shadow and also planned to bring the reality of that shadow. What is God’s ultimate purpose  in doing this?

II.            Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice (5-14).

1.    Where was this word quoted from (5-6;  Ps 40:6-8)? Why was God displeased over the sacrifices and offerings of Israel?

2.    How did Jesus take this word and how did he respond to this prophecy (7)? According to Jesus’ response to the prophecy, what was it that God truly wanted from sinners (7)?

3.    What was the will of Jesus toward God the Father (10a)? What did Jesus do to meet the will of the Father (10b)? Read Mark 14:32-36 and Matt.27:46. What was the response of the Father to Jesus’ prayer to relinquish the cross? How did God speak His will in His response?

4.    How was the Father’s will honored (Phil 2:8)? What might constitute the perfect sacrifice that God wants?

5.    How was the ineffectiveness of the priests of the old covenant  revealed (11)? How effective was the sacrifice Jesus made (12)? How powerful is the one-time sacrifice over the enemy of God (12b, 13)? How effective was the sacrifice over the ones for whom it was made (14)?

III.           The Holy Spirit effected the perfection in Jesus’ sacrifice (15-18).

1.    About what does the Holy Spirit testify, and to whom? Where was this quote from (16-17; Jer. 31:33-34)? Jeremiah 31:33-34 is understood as the promise of the new covenant. Then why did the Jews and religious leaders not make the connection between this prophecy and Jesus’ death on the cross, while the author of Hebrews and his readers were firmly convinced of its fulfillment in Jesus? How does the Holy Spirit “testify” to us? Also discuss the role of the Holy Spirit in the work of salvation (John16:13-15).

2.    Discuss  the meaning of “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Read v17-18. What did God mean by saying “I will remember no more” in  verse 18?
