Everything is possible for one who believes (Mark 9bq)

Mark 9:14-29

Key verse 23 “ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

1.                   [14-16] Who were the other disciples and how did they become alone without Jesus (8:34-9:2)? What was the situation when they came to the other disciples (14)? As soon as the people saw Jesus, what did they do? Why (15)? What did Jesus ask them (16)?

2.                   [17-19b] What did a man answer to Jesus (17-18a)? What was his complaint (18b)? What was Jesus so frustrated with (19a; 1:15; 4:40; 5:39-40; Num 14:11)? Why?  (19b; Cf. John 5:37-38; 6:53-56; 14:15-17)?

3.                   [19c-24] When they brought the boy to Jesus, what did the spirit do to the boy (19c-20)? Then, what did Jesus ask the father(21a)? What was the key point of the father’s answer (21b-22a)? What was his final plea (22b)? What was the father’s problem that Jesus pointed out(23a)? What was the truth about the faith in Jesus? (23b)? What was the father’s response (24)?

4.                   [25-27] Then what did Jesus command the evil spirit to do (25)?  Then what did the evil spirit do to the boy (26; Cf. 20)? But what did Jesus do with the boy (27)?

5.                   [28-29] What did his disciples ask Jesus in private (28)? What was Jesus’ answer (29)? Discuss what he meant by it and its implication for the disciples.
