Deut 29:1-30:20
Key Verses 30:19b Now choose life, so that you and your
children may live
29: 29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
1. [1-9] What may the v1 refer to (Ch 27-28)? After giving the terms of the Covenant, what did Moses remind them of (2-3; Cf. 26:8)? Yet what did the Lord not do for them yet (4)? While this works of God remain without understanding, what did God do more for them? (5-6a) Why (6b)? What and why was Israel able to do further (7-8; Ref. 26:9; Num 21:34; Deut 3:2-3)? Discuss who the LORD is that did might work on these three stages of Israel’s life and what His purpose of doing these (9).
2. [10-21] Who are implicated to this covenant (11-15)? What is the most serious violation of the Covenant (18a)? Who might choose to this road (19a; Cf. Rom 6:1; Jude 1:4)? How serious outcome will this choice bear (18b, 19b-21; Cf. Heb 10:26)? What are the examples of such life (16-17)?
3. [22-28] Who will see what (22-23)? What question will they raise (24)? What is the answer to them? (28) Discuss the answer particularly in regard to the Covenant.
4. [29] Discuss what the secret things and the things revealed are (29; Cf. 29:4; 30:11-14). What is the significance of each in their walk with the Lord? In view of such judgment of the Covenant, how should Israel and her descendant do with the Law of the Covenant (29)?
5. [30:1-10] About when and whom does Moses talk to (30:1-2)? How are these people different from the previous ones (ref. 29:18-19, 25)? Then, what would the Lord do for these people (3-8)? What’s God’s hope in this doing all these (9-10)? Discuss the importance of returning (v2), and the particular blessing these people will receive (6; Ref. Deut 10:16; Jer 4:4; Ezek 11:19)
6. [30:11-20] Why and how is keeping the Law doable (11-14; Cf. 29:29b)? What is its implication to Israel (14b; Cf. 29:29b)? Regarding the Covenant, what two choices do they have and what are their outcomes (15-18; Ref. 29:25-27)? When one choose the Law of Covenant, what is assured for them? (19b-20a)? Why (20b)?
7. Find the similarities and differences between the lives of two different choices on the law of the covenant (29:16-21 and 30:1-2). Find how each of the lives of these two groups of people serves the purpose of God for the world who gave the Law of Covenant to Israel (29:24-28; 30:6-9; Ref. 30:19a). Discuss also what it means to us today (Ref. Heb 11:25; John 7:17; James 4:4; Cf. Rom 7:21-24).
