Jesus sends out the twelve (Luke 9aq)

Jesus sends out the Twelve to proclaim the kingdom of God

Luke 9:1-9

Key verse 9:1-2

1.      [1-2] Whom did he call? What had Jesus shown his disciples about himself and his work? (1a; review 8:20-56 and discuss the impact of these miracles, in regards to Jesus’ authority, the kingdom of God, and the needs of people). What did he give them and for what? (1b) Why did he send them out? (2)

2.      What does the kingdom of God have to do with driving out demons and healing the sick? Why did they need Jesus’ power and authority to proclaim the kingdom of God? (ref. 4:18, 31-43; 11:20)

3.      [3-6] What instructions did Jesus give them about what to take with them, where to stay, and how to respond to those who  rejected them? (3-5) Why do you think he gave such instructions to them? (Mat 10:11-15) What did the Twelve do? (6)

4.      [7-9] Who heard about this? (7a) Why was he perplexed? (7b-8) Why did he try to see Jesus? (9) How did the Twelve’s mission journey impact the people? (6b, cf. 9:18-19)

5.      Overall, what do you think the Twelve came to know about Jesus and the kingdom of God through this experience? (cf. 9:20) Discuss the significance of their preaching what they believed about Jesus and His kingdom.
